Stephanie Garber’s limitless imagination takes flight once more in the colorful, mesmerizing, and immersive sequel to the bestselling breakout debut Caraval

A heart to protect. A debt to repay. A game to win.

After being swept up in the magical world of Caraval, Donatella Dragna has finally escaped her father and saved her sister Scarlett from a disastrous arranged marriage. The girls should be celebrating, but Tella isn’t yet free. She made a desperate bargain with a mysterious criminal, and what Tella owes him no one has ever been able to deliver: Caraval Master Legend’s true name.

The only chance of uncovering Legend’s identity is to win Caraval, so Tella throws herself into the legendary competition once more—and into the path of the murderous heir to the throne, a doomed love story, and a web of secrets…including her sister's. Caraval has always demanded bravery, cunning, and sacrifice. But now the game is asking for more. If Tella can’t fulfill her bargain and deliver Legend’s name, she’ll lose everything she cares about—maybe even her life. But if she wins, Legend and Caraval will be destroyed forever.

Welcome, welcome to Caraval...the games have only just begun.

My Thoughts

I received a print copy of Legendary by Stephanie Garber from Macmillan Library. I randomly got added to their mailing list and this was the first book that I have received. I was super excited. I may have screamed a little and did a dance when this came in. Thank you so much Macmillan for the opportunity to read this book and review it.

I absolutely adored Caraval when I first read it. It was magical and thrilling and I wanted more and more of it. I was so excited to see that we’d get more from the world of Caraval. Last April (2017), I got the chance to meet the wonderful Stephanie Garber at a library conference. It was incredible. I didn’t have a copy of Caraval at the time so she signed a notebook I’d brought with me. I’m so glad I got the opportunity to read this one early. My love of Garber’s work has only grown.

I dove into Legendary without worry because I knew it was a duology. I could start it without having to worry about waiting for the next book. I didn’t worry that I wouldn’t get the actual beautiful copy in my hands for another two months. I dove in and didn’t look back.

While I adored Scarlett in Caraval and was not Tella’s biggest fan, this book made me love so so much. I adored getting to see behind her eyes in this book. I’m so glad Garber decided to give us more in this universe and specifically with this character. She’s a strong character who has some deep flaws but pushes past them. She has a deep love for family, which I highly respect. I really enjoyed getting to see how she reacted to situations. She was truly compelling and I enjoyed this book more than Caraval because she’s such a fighter. Scarlett had to grow into her fighter self in Caraval, but Tella was already one. Instead, you get to see Tella grow in different ways in this book.

There’s a lot to love about this book. I think my favorite aspect was the introduction of the Fates. It had a tarot card feel to it but it was unique and new and not the typical tarot we all know. I really liked getting to know about this world more and getting to explore the heart of the Meridian Empire. I enjoyed getting to know Dante as a character and the new character Jacks. I also really liked the twists and turns this book played.

If you enjoyed the game within Caraval, then you’ll love this one even more. It’s not quite the game you’re expecting and that makes it so much more interesting. The fantasy elements are really played out in this book. I enjoyed the love interests and the dynamics of their characters. This is a beautiful and magical book. It’s deadly and amazing. I can’t wait to get my hands on the hardcover copy and hopefully the playing cards from the preorder gift. (https://us.macmillan.com/flatironbooks/promo/legendarypreorder).

Don’t hesitate to dive into this book. Thanks for reading!

  1. It’s awesome they just randomly added you to their mailing list and you ended up with Legendary! I enjoyed the first one, but had a lot of issues with Scarlett. I felt like she kept making silly decisions and then had everything fall into her lap. I still want to read Legendary, because I think having a different perspective will help, so I’m glad to see it lived up to your expectations!

I found your blog on Bloggers Commenting Back! I’m now following your blog. <3

I know! I was so excited when it came in. I’m pretty sure I screamed and my coworkers were concerned. I can see how you’d feel that way. I got a little bit of that but my love of the world and everything else kept me from dwelling on it. Tella’s character is more of a risk taker. I wasn’t fond of Tella from Caraval but now I love her even more than Scarlett.

Oh that’s awesome! I didn’t realize we were on a list like that! Thanks for the follow!

  2. Squee! I am glad you enjoyed this. I also adored Caraval, and am looking forward to this one. I have heard people thinking there needs to be another book though, so I am wondering what happened at the end.

I definitely agree with those people! There definitely needs to be another book. I expect that she won’t write a third and leave the ending to the imagination of the reader. It’s such a great book. I can’t wait for others to get their hands on it!
