Shh, We’re Listening Reading!
We’re back again with our feature called Shh, I’m Reading. We’ll be doing this wrap-up post to highlight the audiobooks we’ve read throughout the past month. Jess and I (Aleya) are audiobook fiends, especially Jess. Check out what we read for the month of May and see what we thought of them.

♥ Loved ♥
I am sad to say that I didn’t have any books this month that I absolutely loved.
I really liked Sarah Dessen’s Saint Anything. Dessen gives you a little slice of someone’s life the way pizza people get a little slice into someone’s life when delivering pizzas. This was a beautiful book and so worth reading. I’m not exactly certain why I don’t absolutely love it but I just didn’t.
I picked up Hunting Prince Dracula on a whim. I’d read the first book a while back ago and when I needed a new book I figured, why not. I really enjoy the characters in this series and am happy with the adventures they go on. I liked this piece of history and am excited to see what’s next for our two protagonists. A fun read and a great follow up to the last book. The audiobook is really well done for this. I enjoyed getting to listen to it.
I’m trying to read more LGBT books and picked up Almost Perfect because of that. This is an important read because it tackles so many of the issues that transgender teens deal with: parents, friends, dating, and so much more. My heart hurt for Sage throughout this book. My issue with this book was with Logan. You’ll want to slap him many times if you read it, but there are people like him out there so that’s important.
Usually I would read the print of Sarah J. Maas but I was in the middle of another print book at the time and I can listen faster. A Court of Frost and Starlight was a fun little read. I went into this knowing it was nothing but fluff so I wasn’t disappointed like some readers. It’s an enjoyable little book that shows a more domestic side of the ACOTAR crew. I had to go back and pick up the print copy for the teaser for the next book. I’m intrigued.
I picked up The Underground Railroad because I’m trying to read more adult books as well as my YA. The audiobook was really well done. I’m pretty sure I’ve heard the narrator in a YA book recently. I really liked the literal underground railroad which provides interesting discussions on the metaphor it means to convey. It took me a little bit to get into the book but once I realized the structure of the book and the cadence of the writing I was hooked. It was one of those books that will exhaust you to read it because there’s so much terribleness within.
At the end of April I finished book one in the Syrena series. Of Triton and Of Neptune were finished almost immediately after the first book. I really enjoyed getting to explore this world. It’s a fascinating world and I’m glad I picked it up. I enjoyed it but I know it’s not my favorite series. The audiobook was easy to jump into and definitely kept me hooked.
Due to my new job, I hardly seem to have as much time to listen to my books. I picked up Son of the Dawn and Cast Long Shadows as a way to help myself finish things and feel accomplished. Sadly, I didn’t get to focus on them as much as I needed to, so I’ll relisten to them later. I’m enjoying how much Brother Zachariah we got in this book. I especially liked the second story with Matthew and James. They’re darlings and I can’t wait for their series.
In my effort to read more adult books I picked up Annihilation. I’ve seen the trailer for the movie and it really looked interesting so I thought why not try the book. It was… interesting. I’m not sure how I really feel about it. I’d describe it as sciencey weirdness but even that isn’t quite right. It’s one of those books that I shouldn’t have listened to it at my usual pace. It was really mind bending and as such has given me a bit of a book hangover.
I picked up Alexander Hamilton because I wanted to see the source material for the musical Hamilton more than anything. While listening to this book I heard many parts where I could tell the lines originated when Lin-Manuel Miranda sat down to write. I really liked getting the in depth history behind one of our founding fathers. The audiobook was a slow one but it was worth the read.
I haven’t read a Malcolm Gladwell book yet, but I’m glad I picked up Blink: The Power of Thinking without Thinking. It was a fascinating book about thinking and the psychology of it. I really liked getting to think about thinking while reading this one. I’m glad I had the chance to read it. The ideas are ones that are going to stick with me for a while.
Lies my Girlfriend Told Me was started because it seemed interesting and I do want to read more LGBT. I haven’t read too many lesbian stories. This book does a great job teaching readers not to give up themselves for a girlfriend, boyfriend, or anyone. Be yourself and keep your friends. Don’t let someone change you to fit their mold. Someone who loves you for you will find you later and then you work on little compromises. That’s the best message I got from this book. That, and don’t forget to speak the truth. Don’t let lies clog up your relationships.
I won’t lie, I started When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing for two reasons, one, the author is named Daniel Pink (Doctor Who, anyone?), and two, it was really short. I just started a new job this week so my audiobook time has gone considerably down. There’s a lot of little tidbits in this book that I’ll have to go back and listen to again. It provides an interesting look at time that I liked. I didn’t get to focus on it as much as I needed to, so I’ll need to reread.
